Statutory registration is one of the hottest topics in the entire dental industry. Under the scheme, people working in PCDs (professionals complementary to dentistry) will be required to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) and meet certain criteria. PCD registration will cover dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists - in fact, any member of the dental team who are not dental surgeons. A qualified dental technician who has completed a GDC recognisable qualification will be able to register. Overseas dental technicians will need to have their qualification accessed. An unqualified dental technician who can demonstrate that he/she has worked full-time for seven years out of the last ten (or the part time equivalent) and has experience of manufacturing a range of custom-made dental devices in one of the following areas: |

It is now a legal requirement, for anyone who wishes to work as a Dental Technician, to be registered with the General Dental Council. The only exceptions are for those that are currently enroled on a course that leads to a GDC recognised qualification. Laboratory Assistants can work in a Dental Laboratory as long as they do not make an appliance from start to finish and all their work must be signed off by a registered technician. |
